A Remarkable Development for Vietnamese Coffee

Since the reform in 1986, coffee has become one of the most significant contributors to Vietnam's agricultural revenue and the overall national GDP.

The Vietnamese Robusta coffee farming model is a success, with high productivity being key to profitability, not just due to the industry's scale but also because of its remarkable growth from a modest start. In a quarter-century, from 1990 to 2015, coffee production in Vietnam increased from 92,000 tons to 1.6 million tons, reaching 1.8 million tons in 2019.

Many Vietnamese farmers achieve yields of over 3.5 tons per hectare, more than one ton higher than Brazil, the second highest Robusta producer in the world. This is significantly higher than neighboring Asian countries like Indonesia (0.5 tons/ha), Laos (0.4 tons/ha), and Thailand (0.8 tons/ha).

The Vietnamese coffee industry, particularly Robusta coffee, has risen rapidly in a very short time. This exceptional success requires focusing on specific goals.

This growth is mainly driven by four factors: people, policies, resources, and deep farming techniques.
